Huber's Benicia Facility Fully cGMP Compliant
ATLANTA, GA., February 08, 2005 — In late 2003, Huber Engineered Materials (HEM), part of J.M. Huber Corporation, acquired a specialty granulation and tableting operation in Benicia, Calif. Within a year of that acquisition, Huber officials announced, the facility is fully validated and compliant with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).
Full cGMP compliance follows Huber’s strategy of establishing stronger relationships with companies that seek pharmaceutical-quality production standards. Huber’s Benicia location produces powder and granulated naturally mined as well as ground oyster shell calcium carbonate for use in dietary supplements and nutrition / vitamin blends. Calcium carbonate is considered an active ingredient in both pharmaceutical and supplement products.
Current Good Manufacturing Practice is a manufacturing quality protocol defined by U.S. federal law in 21 CFR (code of federal regulations) Parts 210 and 211 and administered by the FDA. Suppliers of ingredients and excipients are following a trend, lead by regulators and the nutritional supplement manufacturers, of increasing facility audits and implementing stringent production standards. The motivation is to optimize and record the production environment, ensure consistent product potency and maintain a highly sanitary and contaminant-free process.
“Manufacturing to fully validated cGMP standards at Benicia allows us to differentiate Huber within the supplement market and reinforces our commitment to produce the highest quality products,” said Michael Carpenter, Business Segment Leader for Huber’s Health and Nutrition business.
Huber has a long history of producing ingredients in regulated industries, like pharmaceutical. In the 1970s, Huber pioneered work in dental type silica for toothpaste formulations. The company also has Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API)-quality cGMP facilities at its Quincy, Ill., naturally mined calcium carbonate manufacturing location.
Granulation (transforming powders into compressible forms by adding a binder system) and tablet manufacturing are essential to the calcium supplement market. Huber’s Benicia facility processes naturally mined calcium carbonate and ground oyster shell powders, which are natural sources of calcium carbonate.
Controlled Function Technology® is a registered trademark of J.M. Huber Corporation for chemcial product modification.
