ATLANTA, November 1, 2005 — Huber Engineered Materials, part of J.M. Huber Corporation, today announced that Gary Rex, Ph.D., was recently recognized for his paper titled, "Rheological Study of Particle Packing in Unsaturated Polyester Resin Loaded with Alumina Trihydrate (ATH).”
The award, part of the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) technical paper selection committee, was for "Best Paper in the Area of Fire Resistant Technology.” The committee recognized the best-in-class research on Sept. 30, 2005, during Composites 2005 trade show in Columbus, Ohio.
“This year we wanted to broaden our reach and capture the innovative spirit behind much of the research being conducted in the composites industry today,” said ACMA’s Executive Director, Missy Henriksen, CCT-A.
Rex, a chemist and thermoset technology manager, noted that this accolade was the result of a collaborative effort within the ATH technical team at Huber. In particular, he credits Mark Herndon and Alex Isarov for important contributions to the paper. “The paper itself deals with how to increase ATH loading via particle packing which would lead to an increase in fire resistant properties of bulk molded compounds (BMC) or sheet molded compounds (SMC),” said Rex. “The particle packing effect was optimized at Huber’s technical center in Faimount, Ga.”
Used as a smoke suppressant and flame retardant additive, Huber has an industry-leading line-up of grades of alumina trihydrate. The company’s laboratory resources feature some the best equipment available to test fire resistance in thermoplastics like wire and cable jacketing and other forms of molded compounds.
